Glen Cowan
Metal Art
My name is Glen Cowan; I am a 59-year-old resident of Paradise, California.
I began making metal silhouettes in 1992. Starting with a flat sheet of steel, I cut, bend, and form the metal into another reality. The sculptures I create are my way of conveying the grace and complexity of things in nature. My art is alive, changing appearance depending on the character of light it is given, just as with all things in their natural environment.
These photographs give some idea of the types of art I can create. The pieces are entirely made from plasma cut steel. My coloring process is unique and has moved beyond the commonplace heat-treated or black silhouette work. Of course, the reflective quality of the colored metal, and the dimension achieved through layering are not entirely captured on film. While much of my work is for interior wall hanging, I also do freestanding pieces, railings, gates, and large outdoor sculptures
To date most of my work has been wildlife related including birds in flight, creatures of the seas, forests, and forest animals. I have also done southwestern and motorcycle themes, and garden art. I frequently do commissioned work as well. I am always looking for new inspiration and ideas, and ways to get more dimension from a flat sheet of steel.
I have sold my work publicly and through galleries for several years. Presently I have work at the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, California, and the Northwoods Gallery in Chester, California.
