Submissions of 245 artworks (a total of 250 images) by 104 artists were reviewed by our juror, JoAnne Northrup. Entries came in from 25 California cities, as well as those from Colorado, Pennsylvania, Nebraska, Texas, New Mexico, and Alberta, Canada. This has been the largest response to our call for artists for Contemporary Woman and the first time in five years that the show has been judged sinced its inception in 2006.

Ms Northrup selected 40 artists and 66 artworks for Contemporary Woman 6.

About CW6 juror:

JoAnne Northrup was appointed Director of Contemporary Art Initiatives in January 2012. In 2011 she was awarded a Fulbright Senior Research Scholarship and based her research at ZKM Center for Art + Media in Karlsruhe, Germany. As Chief Curator (2008-2011) and Senior Curator (2001-2008) at the San Jose Museum of Art, she curated and authored the first nationally touring survey exhibitions and monographs on contemporary media artists Jennifer Steinkamp (2006) and Leo Villareal (2010). Northrup earned her Master's Degree in Art History and Museum Studies from the University of Southern California, and her Bachelor's Degree in Art History from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has worked in various curatorial capacities at the de Saisset Museum at Santa Clara University, the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena, the Musée de Grenoble in France, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.

Ms Northrup comments on her selections for Contemporary Woman shortly after selecting the entries: "…my perspective is not traditional at all--but my focus is
contemporary art, which customarily breaks from tradition in some
way--medium, theme, viewpoint."

Images reflect only a portion of Ms Northup's selections as the community is encouraged to attend the exhibition to view all sixty-six artworks on display.

Naomi Tatum

Naomi Tatum

April 28- May 19

All Media 2011 Solo Show Award winner. Reception: Saturday, April 28, 7-9pm
An exhibition of large scale mixed media collage by this prolific New Mexico artist Note: closes on a Saturday at 12pm

Naomi Tatum of Santa Fe, New Mexico, winner of the Solo Show Award from All Media 2011 exhibits her mid-sized to large scale mixed-media/collage artworks April 28, through May 19, at the Chico Art Center Gallery.

Ms Tatum, traveled from Santa Fe, New Mexico to attend her opening reception on April 28, and was greeted by a modest but appreciative audience. Ms Tatum also spoke to guests that night and shared her views on her art and on making art in general. The reception for the artist was held Saturday, April 28, 7-9pm.

Ms Tatum was selected as the recipient of the Solo Show Award by juror, Peter Frank, Los Angeles Weekly art critic and editor. Frank is also the senior curator at the Riverside Museum of Art, and was especially attracted to Tatum's use of vibrant color found in torn paper, and acrylic pigment applied freely and playfully.

Tatum's exhibit includes mixed media collage, usually consisting of acrylic, graphite, pastel, and found detritus from a trip to New York. Also on exhibit will be a dozen or so select monotype prints. Visitors will soon find themselves lost within the energetic movement which is indicative of all works on display.

The Chico Art Center encourages everyone to attend the opening reception to have the opportunity to meet the artist and demonstrate our community's support of the visual arts. Also to take advantage of the opportunity to ask the artist questions about her art.

Images include: Ms Tatum in front of the many flowers sent to her from admirers around the country, during her lecture, and of many of the artworks on exhibit.
