Spring 2013
Registration starts March 18, 2013. Classes begin April 1, 2013. Not all classes start in the first week.
We offer Scheduled Classes and Workshops.
You are encouraged to register prior to the first class meeting; early sign ups indicate to instructors that they can offer the class. Registration is on a first come first served basis; no reservations without payment. All fees are due upon registration. Please use a separate check for each class payable to the instructor. Call instructors for additional information and materials lists.

Scheduled Classes
APRIL 1 – MAY 20

Basic Clay Handbuilding I & II

Learn many handbuilding skills in this comprehensive class designed to take beginning students from little or no ability to proficiency in many handbuilding projects. Every class has extensive demonstration of skills needed to do each project. Class will cover the making of pinch and coil pots, slab, slump molds, relief tiles, small charactures, design and more. Small scale projects only. Minimum class size of 5. Craig Miron completed his apprenticeship under Shimaoka Tatsuzo in January 1976 in Mashiko Japan. Shimaoka was Hamada Shojl's primary student and went on to receive Japans highest civilian honor- National Living Treasure in 1996. Craig also has extensive ceramic/pottery study and work experience in Kyoto, Hagi, Japan and USA. Pottery on the Wheel & Raku Firing

Adult and children's ceramic class for beginners to advanced. Students will learn to throw "off the hump" multiple pieces from a single mound of clay. Artwork will be finished using the Japanese based Raku firing method. Experience the beauty of seeing your glowing pots removed from the fire! This class is taught at the instructor's studio. Please call for directions. Materials fee $15. Dave Owen is a ceramic artist, a sculptor, potter and educator from 1980 to the present. He received his degree from University of New Mexico, and has exhibited widely. His ceramic sculpture may be viewed on line at his website www.owensculpture.com

A strong concentration on the human head using charcoal, ink and gouache. A $10 model fee paid to instructor. All levels are welcome. Maximum of 10 students.
Sal Casa is a well-known local artist who taught at CSU Chico and other local classes. He is an award winning member of the National Watercolor Society and his work is exhibited in Chico as well as around the country. We all know Sal!

Beginning Watercolor

If you love watercolor paintings and would like to create your own, but don't know where to start, this class is for you. This class is designed for the beginner and will cover basic watercolor techniques including: graded and even washes, wet into wet, dry brush and other methods of achieving desired effects.
We will explore how to start and finish a painting using all the components in between including: color, value, composition and negative painting. Students provide own materials, call instructor for a materials list. Minimum class size of 4.

Drawing From Observation

A basic drawing course for beginners or "returning" students. Emphasis is on drawing exercises to help strengthen observation skills and to explore various drawing materials. While instructor will share some of her materials, students should have a basic drawing pad and pencil set. Minimum class size of 3.

In this fun and exciting class, participants will create simple cartoon and comic book figures, horses, and dragons. Basics of flipbook animation will be taught. Painting and sculpture will be explored. All ability levels including beginners are welcome. You'll have an option to develop gag cartoons, comic strips, card designs and story boards. Student may come early to class to work on projects and look at material instructor brings in. Some scholarships are available.

Handbuilding – Garden Art

This class is a continuation from winter class session of Totems, Tiles and other Garden Art. All hand built in mid-range white clay. Decorating and firing included. Ten lbs. of clay included, additional clay will be $10 for 5 lbs. Even with no experience you will create fun Garden Art. Minimum class size of 2.

Acrylic Painting

This is a basic clay hand building class for children aged 7-15. Many beginning skills will be demonstrated and taught in each class. Experience not necessary but could be helpful, all welcome. Experienced instructor will give demonstrations in each class helping students make progress in proficiency of skills. In this workshop you will create a 3-D visual interpretation of "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain." I will teach you how I make my own shadow boxes and will then guide you through your own creative journey with paint, collage & assemblage. Bring a snack. Minimum class size of 5.

Colored Pencil: Children and Adult Workshop

Techniques of colored pencil will be explored in a fun and informative way. Participants will warm up by creating a colorful pattern on a shark drawing that will be provided. Use of color contrast based on the color wheel will be examined. Students will also create a card and/or small drawing based on teacher's designs or their own ideas. Examples of commissioned soft toy designs using colored pencil by the instructor will be displayed. This class is for all skill levels including beginners. Projects changed for repeat students. Materials provided including top line Prismacolor pencils. Some scholarships are available. Minimum class size of 3.

This class is an excellent way to learn new art techniques and have a great time. Learning how to use oil or watercolor along with the elements in art study is inspiring and so rewarding, hope you can join us. Supply list available at Chico Art Center. MaryAnderson is a graduate from Humboldt State in Studio Art – Cum Laude. She has been teaching over 30 years and shows her artwork throughout the West.

In this workshop discarded materials will find new & unexpected purposes and symbolism. We begin with a pile of small knick knacks & inspiration and end with individual works of art. You will learn elements of design and how to create and assemblage/collage with paint, adhesives, wire, nails and a hammer. Bring a snack. Minimum class size of 5.

Children's Workshops

OCTOBER 13

Mosaic Pumpkin Decoration
$20 (CAC Member) / $25 (Non-Member)

Learn the basics of mosaicing by decorating a flat, wooden pumpkin using tiles and glass gem-drops. We will also grout our pumpkins for a finished look! These will make great Fall or Halloween decorations! All materials will be provided. Bring a sack lunch and a water bottle as we will need to take a lunch break before we grout so the glue can dry a little.
We're sorry, but there are currently no Children's Workshops scheduled.
Special note to parents: Do not drop off children before instructor is in the classroom. Please walk your children to the classroom and pick them up promptly after class. Parents must fill out a medical and information form before the child's first class meeting.
