Spring 2012
Registration starts March 26, 2012. Classes begin April 9. Not all classes start in the first week.
We offer Scheduled Classes and Workshops.
You are encouraged to register prior to the first class meeting; early sign ups indicate to instructors that they can offer the class. Registration is on a first come first served basis; no reservations without payment. All fees are due upon registration. Please use a separate check for each class payable to the instructor. Call instructors for additional information and materials lists.
Children's Drop In Workshops: be sure to keep checking, there will be lots of fun stuff coming up.

Pottery on the Wheel & Raku Firing

Adult and children's ceramic class for beginners to advanced. Students will learn to throw "off the hump" multiple pieces from a single mound of clay. Artwork will be finished using the Japanese based Raku firing method. Experience the beauty of seeing your glowing pots removed from the fire! This class is taught at the instructor's studio. Improving Your Art by Understanding the Elements

Understanding the elements from which all art is created: LINE, SHAPE & SPACE, VALUE, COLOR, and TEXTURE. The first step is knowing what to look for. Emphasis is on the human body.

This class is suitable for beginners, those who think they only can draw "sticks" as well as for those seeking an artistic "jumpstart". We will explore various approaches to drawing, basic materials, and learn to draw from observation. **Instructor will share some of her supplies, but students are strongly encouraged to bring their own basic supplies such as a drawing pad and pencils.

The student will learn techniques of sculpting with paper, making special paste, various techniques for tearing paper, armature building, form enhancement, detailing and finishing techniques. No materials fee.

Beginning Watercolor

This class is designed for the beginner and will cover basic watercolor techniques including: even and graded washes, wet into wet, dry brush and other methods of achieving desired effects. We will explore how to start and finish a painting using all the components in between including color, value, composition and negative painting. Call instructor for a materials list.

Cartooning, Animation and Art Class

In this fun and exciting class, participants will create simple cartoon and comic book figures, horses, and dragons. Basics of flipbook animation will be taught. Painting and sculpture will be explored. All ability levels including beginners are welcome. You'll have an option to develop gag cartoons, comic strips, card designs and story boards. Student may come early to class to work on projects and look at material instructor brings in. Some scholarships are available.

Figure Drawing

This class focuses on the nude figure in costume. Emphasis will be placed on the draped model. Most of the work will be done in color – both dry and wet-on-wet. A $15 model fee paid to instructor. All levels are welcome.

Cynthia has developed this course for those who want to learn to paint in watercolor although many lessons will be relevant to all watercolor artists. The class will be painting a sunlit Pansy that will serve as the foundation for learning all of the techniques of painting in watercolor. Some of the subjects to be covered are; how to combine colors to get darks without creating mud, how to observe and paint what you see, how to create the smooth blended washes including hard and soft edges, how to paint a variegated background and much more.

Fine Art Mosaics for Beginners

Did you know that Mosaic is also Fine Art? Learn how to take a vision and express it in tiny ceramic tiles to produce a fine art (non-grouted) mosaic art work. The design will be up to the student, but the instructor will show samples of her own work and assist. No prior experience necessary. Bring along a bag lunch if desired.

Painting in oil or watercolor is challenging and very gratifying. Learn to work with your desired material, as you understand how to manipulate color and compositional elements. It's a fun way to learn. Supply list available at Chico Art Center.

Guatemalan Art
$90 (CAC Member) / $95 (Non-Member)

Instructor: Jose Mendez
Jose will be introducing themes/content pertinent to the Tz'utujil Maya culture in Guatemala and the traditional "primitivistic" style. Students can choose their subjects from a variety of examples, or come with an idea already in mind.
He will be teaching the use of different types and sizes of brushes to achieve specific effects, also the mixing and use of paint to produce color with more profundity. Depending on the content students choose he can also focus on the adornment. texture, and "fall" of clothing, and techniques to use for landscape and foliage. There will be a minimum of lecture and group discussion and a maximum of individual personal attention. All levels of experience welcomed.
