Classes

Winter 2018

Registration starts January 1, 2018, and runs until class starts. Classes begin January 15, 2018. Not all classes start in the first week.

We offer On Going Open Studios, Scheduled Classes, Children's Classes, and Workshops.

Registration: You are encouraged to register prior to the first class meeting; early sign ups indicate to instructors that they can offer the class. Registration is on a first come first served basis; no reservations without payment. All fees are due upon registration. Please use a separate check for each class payable to the instructor. Call instructors for additional information and materials lists.

LIFE DRAWING GROUP

Monday’s Life Drawing group meets on Monday morning from 9:00am to 12:00pm. It is a private group that rents space from the Chico Art Center. Although a model is provided, it is not a class with an instructor. Joining the workshop is by permission from the group, which relies heavily upon recommendations from group members and other references. You must be a member of the Chico Art Center to participate in this workshop. The other limiting factor is the amount of physical space available. WATERMEDIA GROUP

Tuesday’s Watermedia group meets on Tuesday morning from 9:00am to 12:00pm. It is a private group that rents space from the Chico Art Center. There is no model provided, it is not a class with an instructor. You must be a member of the Chico Art Center to participate in this group. Due to space limitations the group membership is limited to 9. Group is currently full. Cost is $20 to $25 per month. For additional information contract Pat Everett through the Chico Art Center.

PORTRAITURE DRAWING GROUP

Friday’s Portraiture drawing group meets on Friday afternoon, twice monthly, from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. It is a private group that rents space from the Chico Art Center. Watercolor Painting – From the Beginning, Your Way

Class will cover color mixing, washes, wet into wet, masking, value studies, painting from life(still), planning compositions and lots of watercolor techniques as well. There will be discussions about quality of paints, paper, and brushes all with economy in mind. I will give you an overview of transparent watercolor painting, give you tools to hopefully find your own “watercolor voice” and enough enjoyment to continue on your journey…. If you took Watercolor a long time ago, if you have taken only a few classes, if you "sort of know" what to do but are not sure, or just need a "kick start" Try this class. Lessons will be generated by you, the students, working on the problems that you are having, or I will present problems for you to work on such as, What should I paint? How do I paint that? When am I done? How do you do........? This is a sampling of what we might cover in class.

JANUARY 16 – FEBRUARY 20

Pinch Pots and Coil Pots

We will construct vessels using traditional hand building techniques. First 2 weeks will be all about pinch pots and how to make successful vessels for plants or food or décor. The next 2 weeks will be all about coil building and making vessels and the use of this technique for other forms of ceramics. Week 5 is all about decorating with color and more. Week 6 you will take home your finished ceramics. All materials and firing is included in this class.

Adult and children’s ceramic class for beginners to advanced. Students will learn to throw “off the hump” multiple pieces from a single mound of clay. Artwork will be finished using stoneware firing method. Your artwork will be dishwasher and food safe.

JANUARY 17 – MARCH 7

Fundamentals of Pencil Drawing

Materials: Instructor will supply pencils, erasers and paper…along with props and sets of geometric “basic” solids.

A basic pencil drawing class that introduces the fundamentals used by artists to create the illusion of volume and depth on paper. They include: cross-contour lines, shading, shadows, foreshortening, placement, size, contrast, and edges. In this course we’ll start from scratch with warm up exercises and the ways to hold your pencils, study shapes and transparent 3D forms, understand complex objects by reducing them to basic shapes, observe how light produces values and shadows, transform 2 dimensional shapes into 3 dimensional forms with the use of shading and line, sketch still life arrangements of the supplied geometric forms, learn how to lay out and draw 1-point and 2-point perspective, and observe perspective in nature, photos, and art. Watercolor

The class will deal with the basic principles of watercolor. The first 5 weeks will be dedicated to Still & Landscape. The second 5 weeks we will study painting the head in Gouache. Material fees are in the class cost.

In this fun and exciting art overview class, participants will create simple cartoon and comic book figures, horses, and dragons. Basics of flipbook animation will be taught. Painting and sculpture will be explored. All ability levels including beginners are welcome. You’ll have an option to develop gag cartoons, comic strips, card designs and story boards. Paint Big REALLY BIG: Adult Workshop

Join artist Cynthia Schildhauer for a weekend of large-scale, intuitive painting. With exercises to stimulate creativity, participants are gently led to experience to freedom of using fresh, intuitive insight and personal imagery to conquer the daunting mystery of painting big! Demonstrations, technical instruction, and individual assistance are all provided. The course is open to experience and novice artists. Most materials are included—even the 6’x5’ canvas!

Colored Pencil: Children and Adult Workshop

Techniques of colored pencil will be explored in a fun and informative way. Participants will warm up by creating a colorful pattern on a shark drawing that will be provided by instructor. Use of color contrast based on the color wheel will be examined. Students will also create a card and/or small drawing based on teacher’s designs or their own ideas. Examples of commissioned soft toy designs using colored pencil by the instructor will be displayed. This class is for all skill levels including beginners. Materials provided, including top line Prismacolor pencils. Students will create a card/or small drawing based on teacher’s designs (including Valentine’s Day) or their own ideas. Paper Painting Collage Techniques: Adult Workshop

Hand painting your own papers to create a collaged image using a variety of techniques. The form will be created using light and shadow. No prior collage experience is necessary. Some painting would be helpful but not imperative.

Join our in house expert Jon Shult In this fun and exciting workshop! Participants will create simple cartoon and comic book figures, horses, and dragons. Students will be able to draw along with the instructor from pencil to ink stage. Animators practice classical animation in flip books, and are becoming a popular art form in its own right. Students are shown how to do a simple ball bounce and create their own flipbooks. Bring a snack and we will take a short lunch break.
